Blow to Kenyan politicians as Twitter bans political advertisement

Social media site; Twitter on Thursday announced a ban on political adverts from its platform as from next November 2019.

Company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jack Dorsey in a tweet announced the move saying that lots of concern had been raised over many taking advantage of the adverts and mis informing the public.

“We believe political message reach should be earned, not bought. A political message earns reach web people decide go follow an account or retweet,” parts of the tweet read.

According to him, paying for reach moves that decision, forcing highly optimized and targeted political messages on people.

He said that Twitter believed that decisions to like or hate someone should not be compromised by money.

Mr Dorsey said that as much as the company was gaining through the adverts- some of them were well-intended and only end up affecting the lives of people.

“While internet advertising is incredibly powerful and very effective for commercial advertisers, that power brings significant risks to politics, where it can be used to affect the lives of millions,” he tweeted.
