Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi’s supporters on Friday evening and the better part of Saturday morning engaged police in running battles in different parts of the country.
The supporters burnt born fires within several parts of Nairobi and in Likoni Mombasa as they called for the release of the Governor who is serving his first term in office.
In Nairobi, the group chanted pro-Sonko slogans as they asked the police to release him saying that his arrest was political.
“Release Sonko, huyo ndiye mtetezi wawanyonge ambaye tuko naye Kenya hii,” some of the protesters could be heard saying.
In Likoni, case was not different as the Governor’s supporters lit born fires in various parts of the town.
Governor Sonko was on Friday afternoon arrested by police officers in Voi, Taita Taveta county.
His arrest came just hours after the Director of Public Prosecution issued orders that Governor Sonko is nabbed over alleged graft in the county.
However, the governor moments later after his arrest claimed that he was being fought by cartels who operate from city hall.
