Messi was voted as the best male football player for the year 2019.
The Argentina and Barcelona forward beat his nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo to collect his sixth Ballon d’or accolade thereby setting a record of collecting the award more than anyone else.
“As my wife says, it’s important to never stop dreaming and to always work to improve myself and continue to enjoy myself. I hope to continue to play for some time,” Messi said.
He further revealed that, “I know I am very fortunate, even if, one day, I will have to retire. That will be difficult but I still have beautiful years in front of me.”
The efforts of Virgil Van Dijk of Netherlands and Liverpool were recognized as he managed to second place finish during the awards gala held in Paris, France.
“It was an amazing year but unfortunately there are a couple of players … that are unnatural,” Van Dijk observed. “You have to respect greatness.”
He said that he was close only that one player was a bit better than him this time round.
