The Kenya National Women’s Football Team, popularly referred to as the Harambee Starlets, could not match the efforts of the Kenyan U15 men’s team as they lost 3-1. The match was played at Nyayo National Stadium on Monday, November 4, 2019 as part the Starlets preparations for the upcoming Olympic qualifier match against Zambia.
The star-studded Starlets conceded on the quarter-hour mark when the Centre of Excellence striker Ibrahim Mone flicked in a fine cross from the right wing. On the 57th minute Oscar Ochieng’ stretched the lead for the junior team. A late fightback from the women’s team saw their forward Corazon Aquino pull one goal back on the 83rd minute. However, their hopes of a comeback were quashed when Japheth Mzungu’s shot whizzed past the Starlets goalkeeper in the 89th minute.
Nonetheless, the Starlets’ coach David Ouma was full of confidence and impressed by the ladies’ efforts. In the post-match interview, he said “The players have shown great determination hence I believe my team is most capable to face Zambia. We need to start at the right footing in our home ground to give us a better chance to beat Zambia and proceed to the final stage against Ivory Coast or Cameroon.” The first leg of the Olympic qualifier will be held on Friday, November 8, 2019 at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani. The return leg will be held in Zambia on November 11, 2019. Entry for the fans is free for the first leg.
