The 34 year old United States Women’s Team midfielder and captain Megan Rapinoe capped off an impressive year last night by collecting yet another accolade.
She was voted as the best female soccer player for 2019 having led her country to the Women’s World Cup glory earlier this year.
She was also voted as the player of the tournament in the summer event.
She did not attend the Ballon D’or gala but thanked her teammates and the United States Federation in a recorded message soon after she was announced as the winner.
“I’m so sad I can’t make it tonight. It’s absolutely incredible congrats to the other nominees. I can’t believe I’m the one winning in this field, it’s been an incredible year,” she said.
Rapinoe shrugged off competition from Lucy Bronze of England and Alex Morgan of the USA who were ranked second and third respectively.
